Astro-Bio Corp casts you as the sole xeno-botanist of Sector 4, a sealed research arcology orbiting a world whose flora does not photosynthesise so much as compute. Your remit is simple and sinister: catalogue, cross-breed, and stabilise specimens for corporate harvest. The fiction is delivered through the cold cheer of corporate memos that slowly stop arriving as it becomes clear Sec-4 is no longer a priority — or a secret anyone intends to keep alive.
The horror is patient and self-authored. Nothing hunts you at first; you simply make a plant, and then the plant makes a problem. The most affecting lore beats are the ones you generate yourself — a strain you engineered for yield that turns out to spore, a hybrid you bred for beauty that learns to move. Astro-Bio understood that the scariest monster in a creation sim is the one with your fingerprints on it.
The Mechanics
Underneath the cultivation loop is a real inheritance model. Specimens carry dominant and recessive traits across a handful of expressed gene-slots, and cross-breeding follows consistent rules you can learn and exploit — there is no random "rare drop," only outcomes you should have predicted. Mastery is literal genetics: you plan a lineage three generations out to express a trait you want.
The mutation system is where the sim turns on you. Environmental stress — heat, radiation, crowding — raises a mutation chance that can introduce traits no parent carried, and those traits interact with the containment systems in ways the game never flags as "danger."
